Shopping in Vilnius
Literatu Street in the Old Town is the most beautiful shopping street -- an open-air art installation of literary plaques covers one wall, and the boutiques along it sell Lithuanian design, ceramics, and handmade jewelry. Pilies Street, the main pedestrian thoroughfare, has amber shops of varying quality -- genuine Baltic amber is lighter than you expect, warm to the touch, and should come with a certificate if you are spending more than a modest amount.
Lithuanian linen is the standout purchase. Linen Tales on Stikliu Street and Lino Namai sell beautifully made tablecloths, bedding, and clothing from locally grown flax. The quality is exceptional, prices are lower than equivalent products in western Europe, and linen only improves with age and washing.
Hales Market on Pylimo Street is the daily food market, recently renovated with a modern food court while keeping its traditional vendors. The cheese and cured meat sections are particularly good -- Lithuanian smoked cheese (rukytas suris) and dark rye bread make excellent gifts. The farmers' section outside the main hall sells seasonal produce directly.
For contemporary Lithuanian design, Aukso Avis gallery and workshop on Ausros Vartu Street sells fine jewelry made by Lithuanian artists. The design shops along Vilniaus Street stock ceramics, glassware, and furniture by local makers.
The Halės Turgavietė area south of the Old Town is developing rapidly with concept stores and coffee roasters. Tymo Turgus, a smaller market nearby, hosts weekend craft fairs.
For vintage and secondhand, the Kalvarijų Market (known locally as Gariunai's downtown cousin) sells everything from Soviet memorabilia to tools and clothing. It is chaotic, authentic, and best visited on Saturday mornings.
