Nightlife in Gothenburg

Gothenburg's nightlife is warmer and more approachable than Stockholm's, with a pub-influenced culture that makes it easy to meet people and a live music scene that has produced an improbable number of internationally successful bands.

The Andra Långgatan strip in the Linné district is Gothenburg's most popular nightlife street. The bars here are unpretentious, affordable, and packed on weekends. The street runs for several blocks and the variety is impressive, from dive bars to craft beer spots to late-night pizza joints that serve as refueling stations. The crowd is mixed and friendly, and bar-hopping along Andra Lång is a rite of passage for anyone who lives in the city.

Järntorget, the square at the intersection of Haga, Linné, and Majorna neighborhoods, is a natural gathering point and surrounded by bars. The venues here draw a slightly older, more alternative crowd than Andra Långgatan.

The Avenyn, Kungsportsavenyen, is Gothenburg's grand boulevard and its most visible nightlife strip. The clubs and bars along the avenue tend toward mainstream and can be flashy, but the streets branching off it, particularly toward Vasagatan, have more interesting venues. Nefertiti on Hvitfeldtsplatsen is one of Sweden's best jazz and live music clubs, hosting everything from international jazz acts to electronic music nights.

Gothenburg's live music heritage is remarkable. Pustervik on Järntorget hosts touring indie and rock bands in an atmospheric venue. Oceanen on Stigbergsliden in Majorna is a newer venue that has quickly become important for both local and international acts. The smaller bars along Andra Långgatan often host live music on weeknights.

For electronic music, Koloni and the warehouse venues in the harbor area host periodic club nights that draw from Gothenburg's strong electronic production community.

Majorna, the former working-class neighborhood south of Linné, has a growing bar scene with a more local, neighborhood feel. Mariaplan and the surrounding streets have bars that feel like extensions of people's living rooms.

Seasonal note: Gothenburg's nightlife transforms in summer. The archipelago boat parties, rooftop bars at Magasinsgatan and elsewhere, and outdoor festival season from June through August create a completely different social landscape. Way Out West festival in August draws international headliners to Slottsskogen park. Winter pushes everything indoors, but the cozy, candlelit bar culture that Swedes call mys is at its best when it is dark and cold outside.
