Family in Athens

Athens might not be the first city that comes to mind for family living, but it offers genuine advantages -- a mild climate that keeps children outdoors most of the year, strong family bonds embedded in Greek culture, and a cost of living that allows for a quality of life difficult to achieve in northern European capitals.

Kifissia in the northern suburbs is the traditional choice for affluent families. Tree-lined streets, a pedestrian commercial center with cafes and boutiques, and large villas with gardens give it a small-town feel. The Goulandris Natural History Museum here is excellent for children, and Kefalari Park provides a shaded retreat in summer. Several international and private Greek schools are located in the northern suburbs.

Pangrati and Mets, the neighborhoods flanking the Panathenaic Stadium, offer a more urban family life. The National Garden and Zappeion gardens are within walking distance -- shaded paths, a small zoo, a pond with ducks, and a large playground make these Athens' most family-friendly green spaces. The streets are residential and calm, with bakeries and small supermarkets on every corner.

Palaio Faliro along the coast has been transformed by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre and its surrounding park -- a vast, beautifully designed green space with water features, a playground, and free outdoor activities. The coastal tram connects it to the city center, and the neighborhood beaches from Flisvos Marina southward are accessible for family afternoons.

Maroussi, another northern suburb, hosts several schools and has easy metro access to the center. The area around the Olympic complex has open green space and sports facilities.

School options include Greek public schools (taught in Greek), private Greek schools, and international schools teaching in English, French, or German. Most international schools are in the northern suburbs between Kifissia and Halandri. Greek children typically spend afternoons at frontistiria (tutoring schools), and the culture of children playing in neighborhood plazas until late evening is alive and well.

Summer is the main consideration -- temperatures regularly exceed 38 degrees in July and August, and many families leave for the islands or mountains.
