Nightlife in Vienna

Vienna's nightlife surprises people who expect the city to shut down after the opera. While it is calmer than Berlin, there is real depth and variety once you know where to look.

The Bermuda Triangle near Schwedenplatz in the 1st district is where many evenings begin. The cluster of bars around Rabensteig and Seitenstettengasse ranges from lively pub-style spots to more refined cocktail lounges. It fills up quickly on Friday and Saturday nights, and the crowd tends younger and more international. The nearby Donaukanal, the canal running through the city center, comes alive from May through September with pop-up bars, DJs, and food stalls along the water.

The Gurtel, the ring road in the 8th and 9th districts, runs through a series of repurposed railway arches that house clubs and music venues. The stretch between Thaliastrasse and Nussdorfer Strasse has some of Vienna's best spots for live music, from jazz to indie rock. The brick-vaulted spaces have terrific acoustics and a gritty charm that contrasts with Vienna's polished image.

Neubau in the 7th district has Vienna's most curated cocktail scene. The bars along Burggasse and Westbahnstrasse take their craft seriously, with seasonal menus and house-made ingredients. The atmosphere is intimate -- most places seat 30 to 40 people, so arriving before 22:00 on weekends is wise.

For clubbing, the area around Karlsplatz and the Museumsquartier has several venues that program quality electronic music. The Grelle Forelle on the Donaukanal consistently books interesting international DJs and keeps things going until morning. Pratersauna, set in a former sauna building near the Prater, combines outdoor areas with indoor dance floors and runs club nights and cultural events.

Leopoldstadt along the Donaukanal has a growing late-night scene with bars that feel more like living rooms than commercial venues. The Prater area also has the famous Schweizerhaus beer garden, open from March through October, serving enormous plates of Stelze with draft Budweiser Budvar.

Practical tip: Vienna's public transit runs through the night on weekends with Nachtbus lines covering the whole city, making it easy to explore multiple neighborhoods in one evening.
