Shopping in Nice

Nice's shopping reflects its unique position between France and Italy, between Provençal tradition and Riviera glamour. The city offers everything from luxury boutiques to some of the most vibrant street markets on the Mediterranean coast.

Cours Saleya is the essential Nice shopping experience. The daily market -- flowers on most mornings, antiques and brocante on Mondays -- is a feast for the senses. Flower growers from the surrounding hills sell carnations, roses, and lavender bundles, while food stalls offer olive oil, herbes de Provence, dried fruits, honey, socca spices, and the tapenade and pesto that form the backbone of Niçois cooking. This is a working market, not just a tourist attraction, and quality is consistently high.

Vieux Nice's shopping streets are pedestrianized and packed with character. Rue Saint-François de Paule hosts the historic Maison Auer confiserie, which has been making crystallized fruits and chocolates since 1820, and the famous olive oil shop Alziari. The narrow lanes toward the castle hold artisan soap shops, Provençal textile boutiques, and ceramic studios that paint in the traditional Niçois style.

Avenue Jean Médecin is the mainstream commercial artery, with Galeries Lafayette as the anchor department store and French high-street brands lining both sides. The Nice Étoile shopping center midway along provides air-conditioned refuge in summer. For luxury shopping, the streets around Rue Paradis and near the Hôtel Negresco host international fashion houses.

The Marché de la Libération in the northern part of the city is where locals shop for daily produce. Less photographed than Cours Saleya but equally important, this market offers the same quality at lower prices and a more authentic atmosphere.

The Puces de Nice flea market at the port on Saturdays draws collectors and casual browsers with vintage furniture, old postcards, ceramics, and Riviera memorabilia.

Nice-specific purchases worth seeking out: olive oil from the Bellet appellation, Provençal quilted fabrics, handmade santons figurines from local artisans, and the candied fruits that have been a Nice specialty since the 19th century. Savon de Marseille and lavender products are sold everywhere, but the specialist shops in Vieux Nice stock higher quality than generic tourist outlets.
